Kampala International University (KIU) has reinforced its growing international profile after its staff and students participated in the prestigious Erasmus+ Exchange Programme at Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMÜ), Türkiye, a milestone expected to deepen global academic partnerships while enhancing the University’s international visibility and competitiveness.

The exchange programme, one of the European Union’s flagship higher education initiatives, brings together universities from Europe and partner countries to promote academic mobility, research collaboration, innovation, curriculum development and institutional capacity building.

For KIU, the engagement represents far more than an exchange visit. It is a strategic investment in internationalisation, a key pillar increasingly recognised by global university ranking systems that assess institutional visibility, research impact, international collaboration and digital presence.

The development comes as KIU continues its impressive rise on the global higher education stage. According to the July 2026 Webometrics Ranking of Universities, KIU remains Uganda’s leading private university, ranks second overall nationally, and is among Africa’s Top 50 universities, underscoring the University’s sustained investment in research, innovation, international engagement and digital excellence. The latest country rankings are available on the official Webometrics Uganda rankings portal. (KIU)

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Muhammed Ngoma, who is participating in the programme, described the exchange as an invaluable learning opportunity that is already creating lasting academic relationships.

“It is a very fulfilling experience, full of networking, benchmarking, experience sharing and lots of lessons as far as higher education is concerned,” Prof. Ngoma said.

He noted that the programme provides an exceptional platform for universities to learn from one another while identifying new opportunities for collaborative teaching, research and institutional development.

“Internationalisation is no longer optional for universities that aspire to global relevance. Through Erasmus+, KIU is strengthening partnerships, sharing knowledge, expanding research networks and exposing our staff and students to the best international practices. These collaborations improve academic quality while increasing the University’s global visibility and reputation,” Prof. Ngoma added.

Erasmus+ is the European Union’s flagship programme supporting education, training, youth and sport. Rather than funding individual applications directly, the programme supports collaborative projects between universities that promote student and staff mobility, curriculum innovation, research partnerships, digital transformation and institutional development.

Universities participating in Erasmus+ benefit from opportunities that include student exchanges, faculty teaching assignments, professional staff training, joint academic programmes and collaborative research projects. Capacity Building in Higher Education (CBHE), one of the programme’s flagship components, has become particularly significant for universities across Africa by strengthening academic programmes, governance systems, digital learning, entrepreneurship and research infrastructure.

For KIU, participation aligns with its long-term strategy of producing globally competitive graduates while expanding research partnerships and increasing international academic mobility.

Beyond the immediate exchange experience, the partnership with Ondokuz Mayıs University is expected to generate long-term institutional value through joint academic initiatives, collaborative research, staff development and increased global visibility.

As universities worldwide compete for greater global relevance, KIU continues to demonstrate that meaningful international partnerships remain one of the strongest drivers of academic excellence, innovation and sustainable institutional growth.
