The Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA) has launched its 2026 school outreach program aimed at increasing girls’ participation in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines. The initiative encourages secondary school students to pursue STEM careers and contributes to advancing women’s participation in the energy sector.

The launch event took place at Bukomero Secondary School in Kiboga District on March 27, 2026, with six schools in attendance.

The program was officiated by Hon. Ruth Nankabirwa, Minister of Energy and Mineral Development, and attended by Hon. Dr. Keefa Kiwanuka (MP, Kiboga East), ERA Board Chairperson Eng. Grania Rosette Rubomboras, ERA CEO Eng. Ziria Tibalwa Waako, and representatives from leading energy companies including Berkeley Energy Limited, Bujagali Energy Limited, UETCL and UEDCL.

Nankabirwa emphasized resilience, self-love, and the importance of adopting clean energy solutions, highlighting ERA’s special lower cooking tariff for institutions.

Kiwanuka encouraged students to remain focused despite challenges, sharing his personal journey of perseverance.

Eng. Rubomboras urged positivity and dignity while Eng. Waako advised students to avoid distractions such as money, social media, and sex, stressing faith, discipline, and the fight against electricity vandalism.

This year, the outreach program will reach schools in Kiboga, Hoima, Masindi, Soroti, and Kaberamaido.

ERA will also host its Annual Women in Energy Forum on April 14, 2026, bringing together sector players and academia to dialogue on advancing women’s participation.
