For Ugandan singer and songwriter Bridgette Mars, the journey in music has been marked by early ambition, collaborations with established performers and an interruption that forced her to reconsider the direction of her career. Her return to releasing music in 2026 brings renewed attention to an artiste whose story extends beyond the usual cycle of singles, collaborations and public appearances.

Born Kyakuhaire Bridgette, the artiste known professionally as Bridgette Mars was born in Kenya and is based in Kampala. She grew up in a musical family and began singing at a young age, developing an interest in music that eventually led her towards a professional career. Her background helped shape her entry into Uganda’s entertainment industry, where new artistes must contend with competition for airplay, audience attention and a consistent place in the public conversation.

Mars began building her public profile through performances and recorded music. Among her early appearances were performances at the Purple Party Tours in Hoima, Entebbe and Jinja, events associated with television personality Douglas Lwanga. These appearances provided opportunities to perform before audiences outside the recording studio and introduce her music to listeners in different parts of the country.

Her debut single, *Love Time*, released in 2020, marked an early step in establishing her identity as a recording artiste. She subsequently released songs including *Sibimanyi*, working with producers such as Nessim Pan Production and D’Mario on different projects. The releases formed part of her effort to develop a catalogue and establish a sound within Uganda’s competitive popular-music scene.

    ## Building a catalogue through collaborations

As her career progressed, Mars expanded her recorded work through collaborations with other performers. One of the more prominent was *Bwemba Naawe*, released in April 2025 with veteran Ugandan singer David Lutalo. The collaboration placed her alongside an established voice in Uganda’s music industry and introduced her to audiences familiar with Lutalo’s extensive catalogue.

Collaborations can provide emerging artistes with broader exposure, but they also present a different challenge: establishing an identity that audiences recognise beyond a featured appearance. For Mars, building a body of solo work alongside collaborative releases remains an important part of developing a sustainable career.

Her catalogue also includes *Yo Body*, featuring Ziza Bafana, and *Want It*, associated with Daddy Andre. Other releases include *Only You*, *Kyoyoyo*, *Dance to My Song*, *Wendi*, *Dede*, *Munda*, *Owo Munda* and *Public Figure*. The variety of titles reflects her continuing engagement with contemporary Ugandan popular music and its mix of romantic themes, dance-oriented sounds and Afrobeat influences.

In March 2026, she released *Public Figure*, followed by *Katika* in September 2026. The latter release has become particularly significant because it coincides with her return after an extended period away from active music-making.

    ## An accident that interrupted her momentum

Mars’ career encountered a major setback when an accident forced her to step away from music for approximately seven months. According to accounts of her experience, the interruption came at a time when she felt her career was beginning to gain momentum.

The absence meant more than a pause in releasing songs or appearing before audiences. It placed her ambitions alongside the uncertainty of recovery, while other artistes continued releasing music, performing and pursuing opportunities in an industry where visibility can be difficult to maintain.

She has spoken about the emotional effect of watching the industry move forward while she was unable to participate as she had before. The experience also affected her confidence, leaving her questioning whether she would return to the person and performer she had been before the accident.

The lasting impact was not limited to the time spent recovering. Mars has described physical scars and emotional difficulties that remained part of her experience after the immediate disruption had passed. Her account illustrates a dimension of entertainment careers that is often overlooked: the personal circumstances that can interrupt professional progress, even when an artiste has the desire and ambition to continue.

There is no guarantee that an extended absence will be followed by an equally successful return. Audiences develop new listening habits, new performers emerge and promotional opportunities change. For an artiste rebuilding after such a break, returning requires more than simply releasing another recording; it involves re-establishing consistency and reconnecting with listeners.

    ## ‘Katika’ and the challenge of returning

Released in September 2026, *Katika* represents a new phase in Mars’ musical journey. The song, described as a love song, gives her a fresh release around which to rebuild activity after the period away from music.

Its significance lies not only in its arrival as a new single but also in the circumstances surrounding it. After months of recovery and uncertainty, returning to recording and releasing music marks a practical step towards resuming the career she had been forced to put on hold.

Mars has indicated that she wants to avoid a pattern in which a new release is followed by another prolonged absence. Her stated ambitions include releasing music more consistently, improving her sound and exploring different aspects of her artistry.

Those goals place the focus on what comes next. In Uganda’s music industry, an individual release can generate attention, but sustained relevance generally depends on a combination of consistent output, performances, audience engagement and the ability to develop songs that listeners return to over time.

For Mars, the task is to turn her return into a continuing process rather than a single moment of renewed visibility.

    ## Recognition and the wider Ugandan music industry

Mars was nominated in the Breakthrough Artist category at the 2024 HiPipo Music Awards. The nomination placed her among a group of artistes being considered for recognition during a period when Uganda’s entertainment industry continues to introduce new voices and musical styles.

Such recognition is one indicator of an artiste’s public profile, although a nomination alone does not establish long-term commercial success. The more enduring measure is whether an artiste can build a catalogue, maintain an audience and develop a distinctive place in the industry.

Mars’ career also reflects the multiple demands faced by emerging performers. Earlier biographical profiles identified her as a medical student at Mulago Paramedical School, suggesting that her ambitions have extended beyond music. Balancing professional study with recording, promotion and performance can add another layer of complexity to an already demanding career.

Her progress will therefore depend not simply on the release of new material but on how she manages competing commitments while maintaining a consistent relationship with her audience.

    ## A career still being defined

Bridgette Mars’ story is not yet a finished account of success or failure. It is the story of an artiste who entered the industry with an early interest in music, built a catalogue, worked with established performers and encountered an unexpected setback that interrupted her progress.

Her return through *Katika* creates an opportunity to assess the next stage of her career on its own terms. The questions now concern consistency, musical development and whether she can translate renewed activity into a stronger and more durable connection with listeners.

The accident altered the course of her journey, but it did not end her interest in music. What remains to be seen is how the experience will shape the work she produces and the professional direction she takes from here.

For Mars, the next chapter will be determined less by the circumstances of her return than by what she does with the opportunity to continue.
