The Minister of Works and Transport, Gen. Edward Katumba Wamala, on Friday March 6 2026 visited the Spiro Electric motorbikes assembly plant in Namanve where he was impressed to find hundreds of young Ugandans employed along the assembly line.

Gen Katumba commended Spiro for its bold entry into the electric mobility space, noting that the company’s investment in assembling electric motorbikes is contributing to job creation, the promotion of renewable energy and the reduction of carbon emissions.

‘’Spiro assured us that they are not just going to import finished bikes but they import parts and start assembling from here .I have now seen the bikes from nothing to what it is now. This is true that if people are given an opportunity they can deliver . I want to congratulate Spiro for reaching this farand with this kind of focus they will be able to change the boda boda industry’’, said Gen Katumba.

He added that ; ‘’ Spiro bikes are better because they are not producing fumes and environmental challenges . They employ a very big number of young people and many of them are from university and tertiary institutions’’.

During the  inspection , aimed at assessing the progress of ongoing production activities Gen Katumba toured key sections of the facility, where he was briefed by the technical and management teams on the current production capacity, operational milestones achieved, and the strategic plans aimed at scaling up output.

Mr. Bruce Mucunguzi, Deputy Head of Country for Spiro, highlighted that Spiro is able to build an electric motorcycle from the first bolt to a bike that is able to go on the road which has created thousands of jobs.

Whereas the government provides incentives to the supply and manufacturing side of E-mobility , Mucunguzi says there is a need to offer incentives to the demand side so that riders will be able to acquire bikes to help drive electric mobility.

The inspection provided an opportunity to demonstrate the plant’s commitment to quality manufacturing, technological advancement, and contribution to Uganda’s growing industrial sector.

Spiro positions its operations as part of a broader push to align with global sustainability objectives, including advancing clean energy adoption, supporting sustainable cities and contributing to climate action targets.
