Shri Jagannath Rath Yatra 2026 saw grand celebrations in Uganda’s Capital Kampala as hundreds of devotees joined processions, offering prayers and celebrating the festival of faith and unity.
One of the biggest and most sacred festivals, celebrations of Jagannath Rath Yatra 2026, was pushed from Thursday, July 16, 2026 to Sunday 19, in Kampala to allow workers to attend massively during the weekend.
Hundreds of devotees gathered to participate in chariot processions, prayers, and traditional rituals, reflecting the festival’s enduring spiritual and cultural significance.
Organized by Shree Sanatan Dharma Mandal (SSDM) temple , Odisha Association of Uganda and the Indian Association Uganda (IAU) , the event was celebrated with unmatched fervor as one of the most iconic events in Uganda, symbolizing divine presence, inclusivity, and the soul of Bhakti.
Speaking to reporters after the procession , Tharun Patnaik , Chairman Odisha Association of Uganda said; ‘’Rath Yatra is more than a religious celebration. It is a reminder that the divine reaches out to everyone, offering blessings without any barriers.The journey of Lord Jagannath carries a message of love, compassion and equality. When the Lord comes out of the temple and travels through the streets, it symbolises the divine reaching every person, regardless of their background. Pulling the chariot is an act of devotion and surrender. It is an opportunity to strengthen faith and receive the blessings of Lord Jagannath.The festival also reminds people that spirituality is not limited to temples. Instead, it encourages kindness, humility and service in everyday life’’.
He added that this is not just a procession , Jagannath Yatra is the living spirit of Indian spirituality, where Lord Jagannath, along with Balabhadra and Subhadra, steps out of his temple and into the hearts of his devotees.
Every year, millions of devotees eagerly await the grand and divine Jagannath Rath Yatra, one of the most sacred Hindu festivals.
In Uganda, the Jagannath 2026 brought another vibrant and spiritually uplifting experience, filled with rituals, devotion, and a sea of faith in motion.
The procession led by a band started from the Temple, through Entebbe road , Kampala road before ending at the SSDM temple in Nakasero, where prayers and dinner were held.With live instruments being played coupled with clapping and dancing, followers chanted . Others held onto the ropes attached to the chariot.
Gigantic wooden chariots began to move, as if pulled by divine energy, and people watched in awe.
Ramakanta Panda, the Secretary Shree Sanatan Dharma Mandal (SSDM) temple said the event signifies the Lord’s desire to be with His devotees and bless all—regardless of caste, creed, or religion.He said the festival allows people from different backgrounds and cultures to unite and celebrate the city’s diversity.
As the Lord of the Universe comes out of His temple and rides the grand chariot, hearts overflow with devotion.
This darshan is not just a glimpse — it’s a deeply emotional moment where believers come together, hands folded, chanting “Jai Jagannath” with faith.
The Kampala streets became holy, the air felt divine, and time itself seemed to pause in His presence. The celebration symbolizes Lord Jagannath’s love for his devotees and offers a chance for everyone to connect spiritually with the Lord.
The journey started from the SSDM Temple in Nakasero and proceeded to the Kampala road, marking a vibrant celebration filled with rituals, songs, and spiritual energy.
Located along Snay Bin Amir Rise, Near Nakasero Market, Shree Sanatan Dharma Mandal is one of the oldest Temples in East Africa and Dr Sudhir Ruparelia serves on its Board as Chairperson while Paresh Mehta,the chairperson Indian Association of Uganda serves as the trustee.
The temple is a replica of “SOMNATH TEMPLE” in Gujarat and has stayed for 101 years. Only one of its kind, our temple holds a status of “HERITAGE PROPERTY OF HISTORICAL SITE” by Kampala City Council Authority.
