Government leaders, employers, and development partners gathered at the 4th Annual National Labour Convention and Expo 2026 under the theme, “Unlocking the Potential of the Ugandan Youth Labour Force: Advancing Productivity and Opportunities for Decent Work, form the 15th to the 16th of April.

In a renewed push to tackle youth unemployment and accelerate inclusive economic growth, the high-level engagement brought together key actors across the public and private sectors to explore practical solutions for equipping Uganda’s young population with the skills, opportunities, and support needed to thrive in a rapidly evolving labour market.

The Vice President of the Republic of Uganda Jessica Alupo emphasized the critical need to address structural barriers faced by young people, from skills mismatches to limited access to finance.

“We believe that by empowering our youth with skills and opportunities in sustainable industries, we are transforming them from job seekers and tackling one of the most critical national challenges.”

Notably, She commended Spiro for actively reshaping the employment landscape for thousands of young Ugandans, a story of transformation, from job seekers grappling with an uncertain future to skilled contributors powering Uganda’s electric revolution.

The Spiro Academy: Bridging the Gap, Building Futures

The heart of the skilled young workforce at Spiro lies in the Spiro Academy.

“We have established partnerships with esteemed institutions like Kyambogo University, Nakawa Vocational Training Institute, and Lugogo Vocational Centre, to equip fresh graduates with practical training skills to build and assemble bikes at our assembling plant in Namanve.” Stated Bruce Mucunguzi, Deputy Country Director Spiro Uganda.

Bruce added that the graduates undergo intensive training and gain skills that are directly applicable, bridging the gap between education and meaningful employment.

Namanve: A Hub of Innovation and Opportunity

The Spiro Uganda’s assembly plant located in Namanve is a hub of innovation, where the future of Ugandan electric boda boda transport is being built by Ugandan hands. The facility with the capacity to assemble up to 450 electric bikes daily is currently employing over 1,800 young Ugandans in various production and maintenance departments, contributing directly to their families and the national economy. They are becoming the pioneers of green mobility in Africa
