Women pursuing careers in Uganda’s growing digital economy are set to gain access to mentorship, networking, and career guidance through a new initiative aimed at strengthening their participation in the technology sector.

The inaugural Women in Digital event, organised by Uganda Digital Society, will provide a platform for women to connect with industry peers, access mentorship, and better position themselves for opportunities in digital careers.

The event is scheduled for Saturday, 7th March, from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the Bight of Benin on Kyadondo Road. Organisers say the free event will be open to all interested participants, and no tickets are required or being sold.

According to Joan Generous Asaba, Vice President of the Uganda Digital Society, the initiative is intended to ensure women play a greater role in shaping Uganda’s digital future.

“As Uganda’s digital economy continues to grow, it is critical that women are not only participants but leaders, innovators, and decision-makers,” Asaba said.

Uganda’s digital sector has expanded steadily, creating opportunities in areas such as digital marketing, software development, content creation, and online entrepreneurship. However, women continue to face barriers including limited access to mentorship, fewer role models, and challenges navigating career growth.

Research by the United Nations Capital Development Fund indicates that while Uganda has made progress in expanding access to digital tools, women remain significantly underrepresented in advanced digital careers and leadership roles. The study found that women are more likely to engage with digital platforms for communication and small business activities, but face structural barriers such as limited access to mentorship, professional networks, advanced digital skills training, and visible role models in the ICT sector.

Asaba said the event will offer practical career guidance, exposure to experienced professionals, and opportunities for participants to build networks that support their professional advancement.

“Some women have shared that they’ve been navigating their careers alone and are eager to find community and direction,” he said.

Organisers added that the initiative will continue beyond the event through future engagements, including training and meetups designed to support women at different stages of their careers and strengthen inclusion in Uganda’s evolving digital economy.
