The delegation from the National Planning Authority (NPA) , the principal government agency responsible for development planning in Uganda led by the Executive Board Chairperson Prof. Pamela K. Mbabazi, visited Tembo Steel plants in Iganga and Lugazi to witness a multi-million dollar investment firsthand and appreciate its role in Uganda’s economic growth strategy.
The Visit also aimed at strengthening the partnerships and observe the company’s investments in Uganda, which employs over 3000 Ugandans.
Received by Mr Manish Kalla, the General Manager of Tembo Steels (U) Ltd, NPA hailed Tembo as one of the most diversified and integrated manufacturers of steel products in Uganda and Africa. Prof. Mbabazi acknowledged Tembo as a prominent figure in the Ugandan steel industry, known for the work in innovation and business development.

As Africa’s only producer of HRC, structural steel, wire rod, and TMT from iron ore, Tembo Steels operates a fully integrated 1.8-million-ton production facility, pioneering low-carbon steel and green manufacturing.

It is the first in the world to produce low-carbon steel from cast iron, a significant step towards sustainable steel production. Other achievements include producing 0.7mm hot-rolled sheets through continuous configuration and introducing the world’s lightest structural sections via direct rolling.
On a continental scale, Tembo Steels boasts the most diversified product portfolio in commercial steel, covering nearly 70% of all steel produced globally through integrated routes in Africa. The company is the first in Africa to establish a bullet-casting facility and remains the only manufacturer of hollow sections and tubes from iron ore on the continent.
