Banking has evolved from long queues and endless paperwork to something you can do in seconds, anytime, anywhere. dfcu Bank is leading that digital revolution with two powerful tools, that is the *USSD Code *240# and the Mobi Loan.

Both services are changing how Ugandans access financial services, from checking balances and paying bills to getting instant cash in an emergency.

We sat down with Isaac Bigirwa, Head of Cards and Payments at dfcu Bank, for a thought-provoking conversation about innovation, inclusion, and instant access to banking.

Q1: Just for starters, take us through the dfcu USSD Code *240# and Mobi Loan Products?

Isaac Bigirwa: Great question. The dfcu USSD Code 240# and dfcu Mobi Loan are revolutionizing convenience in banking. With the USSD Code, dfcu customers can effortlessly access a variety of services with just a few taps on any phone—no internet or smartphone required, and no more waiting in long queues. Whether checking balances, sending money, paying bills, buying airtime, or borrowing money instantly, everything is just a simple code away!

Additionally, the Mobi Loan is designed to assist when unexpected expenses arise, such as urgent school fees, medical bills, or business cash flow gaps. You can borrow up to UGX 2 million for personal needs or UGX 5 million for small and medium enterprises (SMEs), all from your phone. Repayment is simple, with 30 days to pay back the loan and no penalties or stress involved. Together, the USSD Code *240# and Mobi Loan represent dfcu’s commitment to “Going Further Together.”

Q2: Supposedly, a customer wants to start using the dfcu USSD Code *240#, but doesn’t know where to start. What’s the first step?

Isaac Bigirwa: It’s really simple. Just dial *240#, choose your language, enter your dfcu account number, and set a secure PIN. Once that’s done, you’re ready to go. Registration is free, and it works on all major mobile networks. Within minutes, you’re connected to your dfcu bank account, no internet, no paperwork, no waiting in line.

Q3: Imagine you are deep in a village with no internet or smartphone, how does dfcu make sure you can still bank with ease?

Isaac Bigirwa: That’s exactly where dfcu’s USSD Code *240# comes in. You do not need data, Wi-Fi, or a smartphone to bank with us. Just dial *240# and you can check your balance, transfer money, buy airtime, pay bills, or even apply for a Mobi Loan. It works on any mobile network and on any type of phone. This makes it one of the most inclusive banking tools in Uganda today. We built it to make banking accessible to everyone, whether you are in Kampala or deep in the countryside.

Q4: Supposedly, someone wants to do more than just check their balance. Can the dfcu USSD Code *240# handle the big stuff too, like bill payments or transfers?

Isaac Bigirwa: Absolutely, the USSD Code *240# isn’t just for checking balances, but rather a full-service banking tool. You can transfer funds between dfcu accounts, send money to other banks or mobile money platforms, pay bills like utilities or TV subscriptions, buy airtime, and even apply for a Mobi Loan. It’s quick, reliable, and convenient, everything a modern customer needs to stay financially active without the use of internet data.

Q5: What if I need quick cash? How do I apply for a Mobi loan?  Do I have to visit a branch?

Isaac Bigirwa: No, you don’t need any hassle, and that’s the beauty of it! Applying for a Mobi Loan is completely digital and takes just minutes. Simply dial *240# on your phone to access dfcu’s USSD service, navigate to the “Loan Services” menu, and select “Mobi Loan.” Alternatively, you can apply through the dfcu Quick App or Internet Banking if you prefer.

Once you submit your application, the system performs an instant check. If you qualify, the funds will be credited to your account within minutes, and you’ll receive an SMS confirming the approval, the credited amount, and repayment details. It’s that quick and easy!

Q6: Imagine it’s midnight and someone suddenly needs to pay for a medical emergency. How can the dfcu Mobi Loan help in such a moment?

Isaac Bigirwa: That’s the beauty of the dfcu Mobi Loan, it’s your instant financial rescue plan. No forms to fill in, no queues, no waiting. Just dial *240#, go to “Loan Services,” and select “Mobi Loan.” Within minutes, if you qualify, the funds are credited straight into your account. It doesn’t matter if it’s late at night or a public holiday, it works 24/7.

Q7: How about if someone has never borrowed digitally before? Will they still qualify for a Mobi Loan?

Isaac Bigirwa: Most likely, yes. If you have a dfcu account that has been active for at least six months and you’ve been using it regularly, for example, in receiving deposits, making payments, and maintaining a good transaction record, you’re already a strong candidate. The system automatically assesses your behavior and determines your limit. For entrepreneurs, we also have an SME version that caters specifically to small businesses that need quick working capital. So whether it’s personal or business, dfcu has you covered.

Q8: Additionally, let’s talk business. What if a shop owner or businessman/woman needs to restock or pay suppliers fast? Can they access a Mobi loan?

Isaac Bigirwa: That’s where the SME Mobi Loan shines. It’s tailored for small businesses that need a quick cash boost. You can borrow up to UGX 5 million instantly, straight from your phone. It’s perfect for managing cash flow or taking advantage of short-term business opportunities. Personal Mobi Loans go up to UGX 2 million, and both are repayable within 30 days, with no penalty for paying early. It’s flexible financing, simplified for entrepreneurs and individual borrowers.

Q9: Also, if a customer takes a Mobi Loan and decides to pay back before the due date, what happens then?

Isaac Bigirwa: Good news, they actually benefit. There’s no penalty for early repayment. In fact, paying early saves you interest and boosts your credit score. It shows the system that you’re a responsible borrower, which increases your loan limit over time. So it’s a win-win, you save money and build your credibility for future borrowing.

Q10: Parting shots, what’s your message to customers about these two services and dfcu’s digital future?

Isaac Bigirwa: At dfcu, we’re passionate about giving customers freedom and control over their finances. *240# and Mobi Loan are more than products, financially, they’re enablers. They help people handle emergencies, run businesses, and make everyday banking effortless. Whether you’re checking your balance in Masindi or applying for a loan in the middle of the night in Mukono, dfcu is always within reach. Our vision is to make banking not just digital, but personal, accessible, and empowering.
