When you first meet Lynette Akol, her calm demeanor does not immediately reveal the fiery entrepreneurial drive beneath. But once she starts talking about Krystal Ice Limited, her voice comes alive, filled with purpose, pride, and a deep sense of mission. As the founder and CEO of Krystal Ice Limited, a Ugandan fruit-processing company best known for its delicious frozen fruit pops called ice pops, Lynnette’s story is one of grit, growth, and an unrelenting belief that local problems can be solved through local innovation.

As one of the 2017 dfcu Rising Woman past winners, her vision and persistence have enabled her to transform frozen fruits into an inspiring story of entrepreneurship and impact, building more than just a business but crafting a model of empowerment, innovation, and sustainability rooted in local communities.

From Humble Beginnings to an Icy Dream

Lynette’s journey began in 2017, driven by a simple but powerful idea of adding value to Uganda’s abundant fruits. She founded Krystal Ice Limited to bridge the gap between smallholder farmers and the growing demand for healthy, ready-to-consume fruit products. The company sources fruits directly from farmers across various regions of Uganda and processes them into frozen fruit snacks, popularly known as ice pops.

“When we started, it was a small operation. We were just a few women and two staff members trying to make a difference. What began as a small setup has since transformed into a dynamic enterprise employing 24 full-time employees, most of them youth and women, and supporting dozens of farmers across Uganda whose livelihoods now depend on the company’s steady demand for quality fruits, she says.

The Transformative Power of the dfcu Rising Woman Initiative

Lynette’s rise to a strong woman in business came through her participation in the 2017 Rising Woman Initiative, a dfcu Bank flagship campaign under the dfcu Women in Business Program in partnership with Monitor Publications, designed to empower female entrepreneurs in Uganda. “My journey with dfcu Bank has been transformative. Beyond being a financial institution, they have provided me with mentorship, training, and a platform to grow,” she remarks.

As one of the pioneering winners of the Rising Woman Initiative in 2017, Lynette not only gained funding but also access to a network of experienced business mentors. The mentorship and financial support from dfcu Bank facilitated Krystal Ice’s growth, enabling the company to expand its production capacity, improve visibility, and enhance its business systems.

Through dfcu’s exhibitions and networking platforms, Lynette and her team were able to showcase their products to new and diverse markets. “They created visibility for us,” she says. “Through dfcu Bank, we have also been able to connect with other partners, opening doors to new opportunities.”

The partnership has gone beyond financial support as it has fostered a community of businesswomen who learn from one another and from seasoned entrepreneurs across East Africa. This collaboration continues to empower and inspire women in business, strengthening networks and driving sustainable growth.

    Lessons from Nairobi

One of Lynette’s most transformative experiences came through a mentorship trip to Nairobi, Kenya, organized under the dfcu Rising Woman Initiative as part of the perks for winners. There, she met successful business leaders who shared knowledge on scaling operations, innovating products, and building resilient enterprises.

She says, “What struck me most was how structured their businesses were. They emphasized the importance of systems and governance principles, which we later implemented at Krystal Ice.”

Upon returning, she restructured her company’s operations, introducing clearer management systems, financial accountability measures, and a governance framework that attracted potential investors. These changes positioned K

Krystal Ice as a professionally run enterprise, ready and fired up for expansion.

    Empowering Farmers and Youth

Krystal Ice’s story is deeply attached to the lives of local farmers. By sourcing fruits directly from smallholders, the company ensures that farmers earn fair prices and stable incomes. This model has created a ripple effect in rural communities, empowering farmers economically and establishing steady markets for their produce.

“We are not just buying fruits, we are changing farmers’ lives. Every mango or pineapple we process tells a story of a farmer who can now educate their children or reinvest in their land.” She adds.

Additionally, Krystal Ice’s commitment to employing women and youth has addressed Uganda’s employment gap. The company has grown from a three-person team to a 24-member workforce, providing both direct jobs and indirect opportunities across the supply chain. For Lynette, success is measured not only by revenue but also by the number of lives improved through the company’s growth.

    Financial Growth and Market Expansion

The partnership with dfcu Bank has had a tangible impact on Krystal Ice’s financial performance. Lynette’s first major financial boost came from a UGX 80 million loan from dfcu Bank, which she continues to service over the next three years. This funding allowed her to invest in new equipment, scale production, and enhance marketing efforts.

Now in its season 7, the dfcu Rising Woman is a national campaign aimed at empowering women entrepreneurs with the knowledge, networks, and resources they need to thrive. The Initiative has, since from inception, impacted over 60,000 women in person and reached more than one million virtually since 2018.

The campaign continues to be one of Uganda’s most influential platforms for women-led business transformation as it aims to equip women entrepreneurs with the skills, networks, and resources needed to build sustainable businesses and shape Uganda’s economic future. Additionally, it aims to equip women entrepreneurs with the skills, networks, and resources needed to build sustainable businesses and shape Uganda’s economic future.

The dfcu WiB Program has since grown into a dynamic ecosystem offering tailored financial solutions, business training and advisory, legal and leadership coaching, B2B linkages and exposure, media profiling, and mentorship.
