The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) 3 Infantry Division has boosted its operational readiness with the successful completion of a leadership and ideological course for more than 100 Non-Commissioned Officers (NCOs) at Moroto Army Barracks.

The Division Commander, Major General Wilberforce Sserunkuma Karate, presided over the pass-out ceremony, commending the soldiers for their resilience and transformation.

Maj Gen Karate stressed the importance of continuous training across all ranks, saying: “I urge all commanders to ensure proper ideological clarity and leadership qualities.” He called on commanders to prioritise the training of troops and guarantee security in all seasons as a foundation for socio-economic transformation.

Deputy Division Commander Colonel Allan Kyangungu noted that the course strengthens the foundation of the army while enhancing morale, cohesion, teamwork, and discipline among NCOs. He encouraged the graduates to instil the same values in their subordinates.

Division Operations and Training Officer Colonel Santurino Mashereka Tumuranzye said the course had prepared the participants physically, mentally, and emotionally to take on leadership responsibilities and serve with honour, dignity, and integrity.

Lieutenant Colonel Deus William Achungwire, head of the training team, emphasised that the course is a prerequisite for all NCOs, covering essential aspects of battle readiness, including drills, tactics, fieldwork, leadership, and ideological orientation.

Outstanding performers were recognised, among them S/Sgt Manyifu Isaac (overall best), L/Cpl Kyalisima Sarah (best female), Pte Logir Moses (best in drill), and Pte Ajoe Hamid (best in range exercise).

The training forms part of the UPDF’s broader efforts to enhance human resource and equipment capabilities for greater operational effectiveness and efficiency.

The ceremony was attended by Brigade Commanders, Commanding Officers, and senior staff officers from Division Headquarters.
