Spiro, Africa’s leading electric two-wheel company and fastest growing battery swapping network, has acquired Coexlion, an expert motorcycle engineering and design firm in a move aimed at strengthening its product development, engineering, and localization capabilities as it expands across the continent.

The acquisition brings Coexlion’s motorcycle engineering and industrial design expertise into Spiro’s growing technology platform. Over the years, the team of 28 engineers at Coexlion has contributed to more than 25 motorcycle programs globally, covering electric two-wheelers, chassis and frame development, vehicle integration, reliability engineering, battery systems, and industrial design.

The acquisition of this engineering champion, strategically located in India’s innovation hub and UK, will strengthen Spiro’s ability to design, develop, and manufacture products specifically adapted to African road conditions, rider usage patterns, and customer requirements.

The Coexlion team experience spanning the UK, India, and East Africa, will complement Spiro’s existing technology platform supported by its R&D center in Pune, 150+ engineers and 30+ proprietary patents. Spiro currently assembles its electric motorbikes in Africa and operates active assembly plants in Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda and Nigeria.

The addition of Coexlion is expected to accelerate product development cycles, improve localization of components and vehicle architecture, and support Spiro’s long-term objective of building as much of its technology, design, and manufacturing capability in-house and locally as possible. “This acquisition is an important milestone in Spiro’s long-term strategy to build a truly African mobility platform,” said Gagan Gupta, Founder at Spiro.

“Our ambition is not only to manufacture in Africa, but also to progressively own and develop the engineering, design, and product capabilities behind our vehicles. Coexlion’s engineering depth and experience will strengthen our ability to build products that are adapted to African operating environments yet affordable in line with our commitment to African riders. Thanks to this strategic acquisition, Spiro will soon open its first African R&D center in Kenya.” “Joining Spiro gives Coexlion the opportunity to apply its engineering expertise at greater scale and in a market with enormous long-term potential,” said Thomas Llewellyn, Founder at Coexlion.

“We are excited to support Spiro’s mission to advance electric mobility through locally relevant design, engineering, and manufacturing.”

Spiro is Africa’s largest electric mobility company and operates the continent’s most extensive battery-swapping network for electric two-wheel vehicles. With more than 100,000 electric motorcycles on the road, over 2,500 swapping stations and more than 30 million battery swaps to date, Spiro is replacing expensive fossil-fuel transport with affordable, accessible and sustainable mobility solutions.

Through its growing regional production and assembly footprint, Spiro is committed to building electric vehicles made in Africa by Africans for Africa and the world. About Coexlion Coexlion is an international engineering consultancy specializing in the design of 2-Wheelers and Electric Vehicles.

Based out of Bangalore in India, Coventry in the UK and Nairobi in Kenya. Coexlion provides a user experience-focused design approach. Innovation and design quality are core values. Coexlion serves a global set of clients, including major motorcycle brands and new start-ups alike.

Products range from entry-level mobility to high-value lowvolume superbikes. Alongside the customer-led projects, Coexlion also has in-house innovation projects, with the target of creating IP around the next-generation electric 2Ws.
