NIC General Insurance Company Ltd has been awarded the prestigious ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System Certification following a successful audit conducted by Bureau Veritas Certification Holding SAS – UK Branch.

The certification covers the Provision of General (Non-Life) Insurance Services, affirming NIC General’s adherence to internationally recognized quality management standards and its commitment to operational excellence, regulatory compliance, and customer-focused service delivery.

The announcement was made during a press conference held today at NIC General’s Head Offices, NIC Building, Plot 3 Pilkington Road, Kampala.

ISO 9001:2015 is the world’s most recognized quality management standard, emphasizing risk-based thinking, customer satisfaction, continual improvement, and strong governance frameworks.

Addressing media today, Mr. Elias Edu, Managing Director, NIC General Insurance said:

“Our ISO 9001:2015 certification signals a defining milestone not only for NIC General but for Uganda’s insurance industry at large. As insurers operate in an increasingly complex and competitive environment, disciplined governance, structured processes, and measurable performance standards are no longer optional — they are foundational.

This certification reinforces our strategic ambition to set the benchmark for quality and operational resilience in the region. It demonstrates that NIC General is building institutional strength aligned with global best practices while contributing to the credibility and maturity of Uganda’s insurance sector.”

In his opening remarks, Samuel Opake Praise, Head of Risk at NIC General Insurance Company Ltd, underscored the central role of regulatory compliance and quality assurance in sustaining confidence within the insurance sector.

He noted that in today’s highly regulated environment, insurers must integrate compliance and risk management frameworks into the core of their operational architecture rather than treating them as peripheral functions. He explained that the attainment of ISO 9001:2015 certification strengthens the company’s internal control systems, enhances documentation protocols, formalizes audit processes, and institutionalizes continuous improvement across business units.

“For regulators, partners, and policyholders, this certification is assurance that NIC General operates under structured, transparent, and quality-driven systems. It enhances our risk governance architecture and reinforces our commitment to regulatory compliance, operational discipline, and consistent service standards.”

During her speech, Betty Matovu – Head Non-Life at NIC General Insurance Company Ltd, emphasized that trust remains the cornerstone of the insurance business. She noted that customers increasingly demand reliability, efficiency, and accountability from their insurers, and that achieving ISO 9001:2015 certification provides independent validation that NIC General’s service delivery processes meet internationally recognized quality standards.

“For our customers, this translates into improved turnaround times, structured claims handling, enhanced responsiveness, and a culture of continuous improvement. For our brand, it reinforces NIC General as a quality-led insurer committed to delivering reliable protection solutions.”

The certification positions NIC General to:

    • Strengthen customer satisfaction through standardized service processes
    • Enhance operational efficiency and risk mitigation
    • Reinforce regulatory alignment and governance structures
    • Elevate brand credibility among corporate and retail clients
    • Support sustainable growth and regional competitiveness

Speaking during the press conference, Edwin Kabuleeta, Country Chair – Bureau Veritas said: “In a world where every company claims to be the best, the real question is: how do you prove it?

Today, we are not simply handing over a certificate. We are recognizing a transformation. With the achievement of ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System certification, the National Insurance Company has demonstrated that its commitment to quality is structured, measurable, and aligned with internationally recognized standards”.

“On behalf of Bureau Veritas, I extend our sincere congratulations to the entire NIC team. We are proud to have partnered in this journey and commend their leadership for setting a benchmark that elevates not only their organization, but the broader industry.

Excellence is a deliberate choice. Today, NIC has demonstrated that choice,” He concluded.

NIC Holdings Limited (formerly National Insurance Corporation Limited) was established in 1964 as a wholly owned Government parastatal and became Uganda’s leading provider of insurance and financial services. In 2005, NIC was privatized, with Industrial and General Insurance PLC (IGI) acquiring a majority stake through Corporate Holdings Limited.

With the completion of privatization in 2010, NIC became the first insurance company to be listed on the Uganda Securities Exchange.

In compliance with the Insurance (Amendment) Act requiring separation of life and general insurance businesses, NIC General Insurance Company Ltd was incorporated on 3rd March 2014 as a wholly owned subsidiary of NIC Holdings Limited to undertake general (non-life) insurance services.

Today, NIC General continues to build a reputation anchored in governance, innovation, and customer-centric service delivery.
