The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has urged young people, media practitioners, and content creators to embrace innovation beyond technology, emphasizing that creativity and ideas are critical in addressing unemployment and driving socio-economic transformation.

Speaking at the inaugural Nile Excellence Annual Awards held at Rock Classic Hotel in Tororo, Mr Ibrahim Kibuuka Bosa, Head of Public Relations and International Relations at UCC, underscored that innovation should not be narrowly defined as digital tools, but rather as the practical application of ideas, creativity, and knowledge to solve community challenges and generate employment.

“Innovation is not just about technology. It is about ideas, creativity, and how people use available resources to create solutions that generate income and transform communities,” Mr Kibuuka stated.

He encouraged media practitioners and content creators to innovate in storytelling, production, and content distribution, noting the creative industry’s significant potential to absorb unemployed youth. Mr Kibuuka further emphasized UCC’s commitment to supporting responsible, professional, and innovative media initiatives that equip young people with sustainable skills.

Addressing Youth Unemployment in Eastern Uganda.

Eastern Uganda faces a critical youth unemployment challenge, with estimates indicating that over 60% of young people in the region are without formal employment. The Nile Excellence Annual Awards were established to bridge the gap between talent and opportunity by recognizing, supporting, and promoting innovation, creativity, and talent as avenues for entrepreneurship and job creation. Through mentorship, exposure to investors, and practical guidance, the initiative aims to transform talent into viable businesses, thereby reducing unemployment in the region.

    Statements from Key Stakeholders

Dr Anthony Mula, Director General of the Busoga Consortium for Development, pledged technical guidance and collaboration, urging young people to leverage the digital era to create their own income sources.

“Uganda can move from a third-world to a middle-income economy by harnessing the talent and innovation of its youthful population, but the youth must wake up and use the digital era and the skills they acquire to create income,” Dr Mula affirmed.

Following him, Ms Cinderellah Damba, President of the Nile Excellence Annual Awards and Miss Tourism Eastern Region, emphasized the initiative’s commitment to ongoing support for winners.

“We are not ending with awards. Our focus is to follow up with the winners and connect them to partners and investors so their ideas can grow into impactful projects,” Ms Damba said.

Mr Samuel Mwesigwa, Chairman of the Nile Excellence Awards, highlighted the importance of transforming Eastern Uganda into a hub for technological and creative innovation. He made a formal appeal to the Government of Uganda through the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation to support initiatives such as the Nile Excellence Awards.

“We appeal to the Government, through the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, to support programs that harness the creativity and innovation of young people. Initiatives like the Nile Excellence Annual Awards align perfectly with the objectives of Uganda’s National Development Plan IV (NDP4), which prioritizes youth employment, skills development, and innovation-driven economic growth,” Mr Mwesigwa stated.
“With Government support, we can scale these initiatives to reach more young people, turning talent into viable businesses and addressing unemployment in Eastern Uganda.”

    Celebrating Award Winners

The first edition of the awards recognized excellence in over 20 categories, including media, arts, content creation, innovation, tourism, and heritage. Award winners spoke out in appreciation of the initiative.

Ms Doreen Kairamira King, winner of Best Innovator of the Year and Executive Director of Slum Women Initiatives for Development, thanked the organizers and pledged further support for the project. Sarah Musime, winner of Best TV Personality and founder of a community organization supporting elderly women and youth, celebrated the success. Other winners, including Mwesigwa Grace, applauded the initiative for promoting regional talent and creating opportunities.

Renowned Ugandan artist Magada Kisame, popularly known as Maro, also commended the awards for celebrating regional talent.

“Most initiatives put the spotlight on city-based talent, yet there is immense potential in the regions. Platforms like Nile Excellence Annual Awards are important because they give regional talent national visibility,” Maro said.

The inaugural Nile Excellence Annual Awards successfully highlighted Eastern Uganda’s talent and creativity, providing a practical pathway for transforming youth unemployment into entrepreneurship and sustainable socio-economic development.
