Wendi, a digital mobile wallet developed by PostBank Uganda, which is rebranding to Pearl Bank, has partnered with the Rotary Club of Muyenga Tank Hill and Acacia Sunset to support the 14th edition of the Rotary Cancer Run, aiming to fight the scourge of cancer in Uganda.

Steven Mwesige, Ag. Chief Information Security Officer at PostBank Uganda (6th R), Kenneth Rubango, President of the Rotary Club of Muyenga Tankhill Sunset (4th L), representatives of Rotary Club of Muyenga Tankhill, and PostBank staff during the handover of Rotary Cancer Run kits purchased through Wendi by PostBank to join in the fight against cancer in Uganda ahead of the 2025 Annual Cancer Run on 31st August 2025.

This year’s runis focusing on raising funds for the construction of specialized underground bunkers to house state-of-the-art Linear Accelerator (LINAC) radiotherapy machines, which are essential for delivering advanced cancer treatment.

According to the GLOBOCAN 2022 report by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), Uganda faces nearly 35,000 new cancer cases annually, with more than 22,000 deaths attributed largely to late detection and limited treatment options.

PostBank’s Acting Chief Information Security Officer, Rtn. Steven Mwesige, commended Rotary on its dedication to not only raising funds to tackle the cancer crisis in Uganda over the years but also its continued efforts in forging ways to curb its spread through sensitization conducted during the periodic medical camps.

“Cancer is one of the leading causes of death in the world, and we acknowledge the critical role Rotary is playing in the fight against cancer in Uganda.

Health is among the key Corporate Social Investment (CSI) pillars championed by PostBank. We value the health of Ugandans and support initiatives that are aimed at improving their quality of life because a healthy population is important forthe development of the country’s economy,“He said.

Mwesige added, “The Rotary Cancer Run is one of the largest and most impactful charity events in Uganda, and we urge everyone to join usin this fight against cancer.”

Kenneth Rubango, the President of the Rotary Club of Muyenga Tank Hill, expressed his gratitude to Wendi for their generosity ahead of the Rotary Cancer Run.

“We appreciate Wendi for standing with us in the fight against cancer by procuring over 200 kits for its staff to participate in the upcoming Rotary Cancer Run slated for this Sunday, 31st August 2025. This support shows a genuine concern for the well-being of Ugandans, and together we can make a real difference in saving lives and giving hope to families,” Rubangosaid.

The Rotary Cancer Run is an annual charity event whose proceeds go towards expanding Uganda’s capacity to fight cancer. Last year, the funds raised helped construct and equip the Rotary Cancer Ward at St. Francis Hospital Nsambya.

Launched in November 2023, Wendi is PostBank’s (which is rebranding to Pearl Bank) innovative mobile wallet, designed to provide seamless financial services to underserved and last-mile customers. Wendi enables users to access, manage, and transact funds efficiently, supporting both individual and community financial needs. Since its launch, the wallet has onboarded over 1.3 million subscribers and operates through a network of 6,000 agents across Uganda.

In partnership with the Government of Uganda, Wendi has played a key role in implementing initiatives such as the disbursement of Parish Development Model funds to beneficiaries and relief support for Bududa landslide victims, among other projects.
