In Uganda’s agricultural sector, the difference between potential and performance often comes down to access: access to finance, to knowledge, and to markets. For dfcu Bank, this is where its role as Uganda’s Agricultural Bank is most critical, enabling farmers to move beyond subsistence and into commercially viable, scalable businesses.

Charles Oyuk’s journey brings this impact to life. A trained teacher from Eastern Uganda, Charles turned to poultry farming out of necessity, seeking a more sustainable way to support his family. He started small, with just 50 broiler chicks, and built his enterprise step by step through discipline, continuous learning, and a commitment to doing things right.

From the beginning, he approached farming as a business. He focused on hygiene, maintained strict operational standards, and kept detailed records across his production cycle. This allowed him to track performance, manage costs, and make informed decisions that steadily improved his results over time.

His impact quickly extended beyond his own farm. Long before national recognition, Charles was already training other farmers, sharing his knowledge and practical experience. To date, he has supported the establishment of more than ten poultry farms, some of which have grown larger than his own. His work reflects a simple but powerful model: when one farmer grows with discipline, others can grow with them.

His breakthrough came through the Best Farmers Awards, an initiative led by dfcu Bank in partnership with Vision Group, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, De Heus Koudijs Nutrition BV and the New Vision Foundation. The programme goes beyond recognition, combining funding, technical knowledge, and international exposure to accelerate high-potential farmers.

For Charles, the impact was immediate and practical. The UGX 7 million award provided critical growth capital. He invested directly into strengthening his farm infrastructure, including roofing materials, a 30,000-litre water tank, and improved fencing and biosecurity. These upgrades enhanced his production capacity, reduced operational risks, and positioned his enterprise for expansion.

Equally transformative was the exposure component of the programme. A learning visit to the Netherlands gave Charles first-hand access to advanced poultry systems. He observed efficient feeding and watering technologies, stringent biosecurity practices, and integrated farm management approaches that minimise losses and maximise productivity.

The visit also opened doors to international networks, including potential partnerships and ongoing knowledge exchange. While the level of mechanisation he encountered remains capital-intensive, the experience reshaped his long-term strategy. He is now focused on gradually introducing modern systems into his operations as his financial capacity grows, improving efficiency and resilience over time.

His journey also reflects a broader challenge within Uganda’s agricultural sector: strong demand exists, but many farmers lack the working capital and asset financing required to scale production. Without affordable and well-structured financing, growth remains constrained.

This is where dfcu Bank continues to play a catalytic role, providing tailored agricultural financing solutions that enable farmers to invest, expand, and operate sustainably

Today, Charles is building towards his next phase of growth. From a current flock of approximately 4,000 layers, he plans to expand to between 35,000 and 40,000 birds. The opportunity is clear: demand for eggs in the Teso sub-region continues to outpace local supply, creating a strong market for increased production.

By scaling his business, he aims to strengthen local supply chains, reduce dependence on distant markets, create employment, and contribute to regional food security.

At the same time, he remains committed to knowledge sharing. Through weekly agricultural radio programmes and planned farmer training sessions and demonstrations, he continues to equip other farmers with the skills needed to succeed.

Charles Oyuk’s journey demonstrates what is possible when access meets ambition. It shows how financing, knowledge, and exposure can transform individual farmers into business leaders, and how that transformation can ripple across communities.

Through initiatives like the Best Farmers Awards, dfcu Bank is not only supporting farmers, it is building a stronger, more competitive agricultural sector for Uganda.
