As schools re open for the Academic calendar this week ,teachers are urged not to solely focus on academics but blend classroom excellence with hands-on learning.

This is because Parents are increasingly seeking institutions that go beyond exam success.

This is according to Sekakoni Deo,the head teacher Muhika Junior School in Kira Municipality that is now drawing attention not only for strong Primary Leaving Examination results, but having practical skills training at primary level.

In the 2025 PLE results released by the Ministry of Education and Sports, the school posted an impressive 85 percent success rate. Out of 15 candidates, 12 scored First Grade and three earned Second Grade.

He says the approach aligns with Uganda’s growing emphasis on skills-based education under the Directorate of Industrial Training framework, which prioritizes competence and hands-on ability.

He says as schools re open, academic excellence and practical skills can grow side by side as Muhika is championing it through its skills development and Skilling Center.

Muhika’s distinction goes beyond examination results. In recent years, Uganda has intensified efforts to promote hands-on learning through the Directorate of Industrial Training (DIT), which emphasizes practical competencies over purely theoretical instruction. While such initiatives are more common at secondary level, few primary schools have embraced structured skilling programs.

Through its Muhika Skilling Center, the school offers learners training in baking, arts and crafts, tailoring, swimming, and music. Children as young as six are introduced to practical skills designed to help them discover talents early and build confidence beyond the classroom.

The national DIT framework prioritizes agriculture, technical trades such as electrical installation and plumbing, as well as business and creative arts. By aligning its skilling initiatives with this national direction, Muhika is contributing to Uganda’s broader education reforms.

School leaders say the goal is to nurture well-rounded learners equipped with both academic knowledge and life skills.
